Jorge Pérez

Jorge Pérez was a Honduran child who moved from La Ceiba to Baltimore with his family in 2050. He was six at the time of the move and was the younger brother of Adelina Pérez, whose need for neurological care prompted the family’s relocation.

Early Life and Relocation

Jorge lived with his parents, Camila and Emilio, and his older sister in La Ceiba, Honduras. Adelina’s worsening seizures, repeated medical appointments, and his parents’ search for treatment were part of his early childhood. The family sold its car and then its home while seeking care after seven neurologists across Honduras and Guatemala failed to diagnose or effectively treat Adelina’s seizures. The Weston Clinic, Reverie, and donations from the band covered the family’s travel and move to Baltimore so Adelina could receive care from Logan Weston.

The family moved into the furnished Pérez family residence.

Personality

Jorge was affectionate, curious, and quick to laugh. At six, he wanted to draw, eat ice cream, and see Adelina feel better. He arrived in Baltimore unusually quiet and frightened, but hopeful with the rest of his family. Once he felt safer, his questions, jokes, and drawings returned. He accepted Charlie’s wheelchair, AAC device, visible feeding tube, and Mo’s assistance as parts of Charlie’s daily life. His superhero drawing gave Charlie’s wheelchair lightning-bolt wheels because he thought the chair was exciting rather than pitiable.

Cultural Identity and Language

Jorge was Honduran. Spanish was his primary language, and he was learning English after the family’s move to Baltimore. Leaving La Ceiba took him away from his familiar home and routines at an age when he could not fully explain the disruption, though he knew the move was meant to help Adelina.

Arrival in Baltimore

At the airport, Jorge clung to Camila’s hand and watched the unfamiliar surroundings; he slept against her during the drive to the house. He initially hid behind Emilio when he met Charlie Rivera. Their first exchange centered on chocolate ice cream. Charlie used his AAC device to announce an ice-cream mission, making Jorge laugh; Jorge chose a spoon after checking with Emilio and ate his ice cream beside Adelina.

During the first evening, Jorge helped set the dinner table with baby carrots and drew superheroes with Charlie. He labeled a drawing of Logan “Doctor Cerebro” and gave a caped character with monitor wires the name “Dr. Burrito.” When Mo tilted Charlie’s wheelchair during a blood-pressure drop, Jorge came closer and asked whether Charlie was in pain. Charlie’s joking AAC response made him laugh. A later, more severe fatigue crash frightened Jorge; he climbed into Adelina’s lap and watched Mo care for Charlie. Both children asked to sleep in their parents’ room that night.

The following morning, Jorge continued his superhero drawing and added Charlie beside Logan, with lightning bolts on the wheels of Charlie’s chair. He kept the drawing close through breakfast and later went with Emilio and Mo to look at the small garden beds outside the house.
